When I was in second grade, my teacher (who happened to be my aunt) asked the class what we wanted to be when we grew up. My answer was twofold: to become a nurse and to live in California. These two dreams guided the early path of my life. By the time I was 22, I had graduated with a BSN from Villa Maria College in Erie, Pennsylvania and moved to San Francisco, California. I was fortunate to have a financially and emotionally supportive family that enabled and empowered me to fulfill these dreams. I took the NCLEX exam in Sacramento and started working on a gyn/urology surgical unit at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). There were several reasons why I took the job at UCSF, which was one of nearly a dozen offers I had thanks to the nursing shortage of 1981.
