In 2010, Chileans suffered two catastrophes that became worldwide news. On Feb. 27, an earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, with a subsequent tsunami, made this disaster one of historic proportions. Later that same year, on Aug. 5, 33 miners were trapped in a mine 700 meters underground (more than 2,000 feet) near the city of Copiapo. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), both episodes in Chile can be considered traumatic events. However, only some individuals who have been exposed to these experiences will develop some kind of mental disorder, while others will use resources that will help them recover from these events. This capacity is known as resilience.
